Upon hearing of the Nazi Germany’s attack on the Soviet Union, at a rally on June 23, 1941 teaching staff, researchers and students declared themselves mobilized to do everything the Motherland would require them to do

During the Great Patriotic War, around 2400 people from the Institute and the University were mobilized to the frontline

Nevertheless, the Institute continued to work – the country and the military front needed specialists. Classes were held in four shifts, the last one ended at 1 am

Victory Day started early in the morning at 4 AM with celebrations in the dormitories, outside in the rain, and in the main campus building. The Director of the Institute A.S. Kachko and a Hero of the Soviet Union N.A. Anikin gave a speech in the assembly hall

The anthem of the Soviet Union, and the international communist anthem «International», the song «Wide is My Motherland…» were played. Then there was dancing in the foyer of the assembly hall. Victory! Joy with tears in eyes, because not everyone returned from the war. The names of the fallen heroes have been written in «The Book of Memory»

In the evening the word ’Победа’ (Victory) was displayed with electric lights on the façade of the institute main building

Establishment of the Ural Federal University

President of Russian Federation Dmitri Medvedev signs an executive order on creation of 5 federal universities, including one in Urals. USTU-UPI and USU merge into Ural Federal University

2010

University hosted the Petersburg Dialogue Forum, which was attended by Angela Merkel (Federal Chancellor of Germany) and Dmitri Medvedev (President of Russia)

2011

Institutes were created at UrFU. Some of them arose from large faculties and some of them grouped together into new structures, forming interdisciplinary ties and opening new horizons for research. As a result, the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics was called the Berkeley of the Urals, and the Ural Institute of Humanities - the Arts & Humanities Mecca of the Urals

Establishment of UPI, USU and UrFU Alumni Association

Today, the Association has more than 3500 members from around the world. There are 6 russian and 8 foreign representative offices in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Afghanistan, Vietnam. 3 Trust Funds were formed with the participation of the Association, 2 of them by graduates from Kazakhstan and Mongolia. More than 10 foreign organizations have been engaged as UrFU partners to promote the University throughout the world

Start of 5-100 Russian Academic Excellence Project

The Ural Federal University became a participant in the federal 5-100 Project, whose goal is to improve the global competitiveness of Russian universities. A New Student Dormitory

For the first time in decades, university constructed a new student dormitory on its campus: 10-storey building hosted 1000 students
In 2017 university inaugurates another modern 16-storey student dormitory with 1230 places. Today, a third student dormitory is being designed. In total, UrFU’s campus has 16 student dormitories with more than 7500 places

International Sports Programming Championship

City of Yekaterinburg and Ural Federal University hosted the ACM ICPC International sports programming championship. The competition, which brought together 2286 universities from 94 countries, was attended by 122 teams, including from UrFU

Chemicals and Pharmaceutical Center opens its doors at the university. In laboratories, researchers, together with students, work on development, production technologies, expert evaluation and application of new drugs

Meteor expedition

A group of scientists went on a meteorite expedition to the South Pole
In three weeks, UrFU scientists found several hundred samples of celestial bodies in Antarctica, which were examined at the Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies research and education center under the guidance of Professor Viktor Grokhovskii

20th Mendeleev Convention

City of Yekaterinburg hosted the 20th Mendeleev Convention, co-organized by UrFU. The event brought together chemists from all over Russia and 38 countries of the world. A special guest was the Nobel laureate Dan Shechtman. He met with university students and told them how to become a famous scientist

Model Factory of Lean Manufacturing

The first model factory of lean manufacturing is open at the Ural Federal University. Working at the unique facility, students learn to model production - complete working cycle of production manufacturing, including logistics and quality control

International Young Physicists Tournament – IYPT

23 years later, the International Young Physicists Tournament (IYPT) returned to Russia. Ural Federal received the right to host such a prestigious competition: 29 teams from around the world presented solutions to complex research and scientific problems. Russia was represented by a team from UrFU Lyceum (Specialized Teaching and Research Centre)

Museum and Exhibition Complex

On the university’s anniversary, UrFU Museum and Exhibition Complex opens its doors after reconstruction, showing an absolutely modern format

«UrFU Student of the Year» Annual Awards

The first «UrFU Student of the Year» Annual Awards ceremony was held and has become a good tradition of summarizing the results of the year of student life

The World Youth and Students Festival was held for the third time in our country (before that, the 6th festival was held in Moscow in 1957 and the 12th festival in 1985)

The start of Digital University Project

The university received a grant of 647 million rubles from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for Digital University project implementation. The digital transformation program is aimed at developing existing information services and creating new ones. The university also established an international scientific and methodological center to disseminate best training practices in mathematics, computer science and technology

Creation of World-Class Research and Education Center

«Advanced Technologies and Materials» Ural Interregional Research and Education Center (UIREC) will integrate capacities of education and scientific organizations and real economy sector companies of the three neighboring regions: Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Kurgan, in the conduct of world-level applied research and development activities, creating competitive technologies and products and their subsequent commercialization, as well as staff training. The UIREC is also aligned with 2 other initiatives: creating of world-class research centers on the basis of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Tatishchev Innovation and R&D Center

The 10th anniversary Vienna Music Film Festival was traditionally organized on the square in front of the main academic building of the university and attracted nearly 90,000 people in 25 days
